OVERVIEW

The use of the term “Global South” in various disciplines lacks a clear and consistent definition, leading to concerns about its homogenizing and historically colonial connotations. The concept is often associated with socio-economic marginality and multilateral alliances among countries with similar Human Development Index (HDI) rankings. We describe ourselves as a “Global South organization” with a focus on context-based research. However, we grapple with challenges arising from being rooted in societies that are Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD), while striving to represent the Global South. This report aims to shed light on how the composition of our diverse team influences its research and the challenges it faces in reconciling its Global South identity with its international makeup

Here are key insights into how our identity as a Global South organization influences our staff’s perceptions and work. The research identifies distinct staff identities based on their relation to the Global South (GSGS), Global North (GSGN), and Global North with Global South roots (GNGN), impacting how they view their roles, contributions, and research approaches. Our multiculturalism both enables and hinders context-based research, while funding dependencies and external parameters challenge this approach. Commissioning the report showcases Busara’s commitment to improvement, emphasizing valuing diverse education, fostering context-based research, and addressing power dynamics for meaningful knowledge production. Greater clarity on the term Global South, appreciation of staff perspectives, and inclusive research efforts are crucial for our mission success in relevant and impactful knowledge production aligned with the needs of the Global South.
